Flat Creek Crossing Update

As is true with so many other locations around Montreat and western North Carolina, Hurricane Helene altered the planned Flat Creek accessible trail site inside the Montreat Gate. The floodwaters changed both the route and the width of Flat Creek itself, washed away trees and shrubs, and deposited numerous large boulders along the previously cleared path. The footbridge adjacent to the site was also lost to the storm.
Despite these challenges, the Landcare Committee is moving forward and expects to begin removing sediment this month. A new site survey has been done that will guide design modifications. Native trees, shrubs, and perennials that can handle the increased sunlight in the location will replace the lost foliage. Many plant plugs will stabilize the creek bank repair. A second picnic area on the opposite side of the creek is now possible due to landscape alteration on that side.
New grants and fundraising opportunities are being explored to build a fully accessible bridge near the Memorial Garden connecting to Elizabeth’s Path and the Gate Trail, replacing the one that was demolished in the hurricane.
Based on pre-Helene estimates, the project remains approximately $55,000 short of funding for the welcome center and accessible parking space(s). Questions about the project can be directed to Eric Nichols at ericmontreat@gmail.com.
