Montreat Minute 2/6/26

Because they are so busy, it’s hard to get a photo with all five members of Public Works. In left photo front, Jarod McIntosh. In back, L to R, Barry Creasman, Drew Brown, Daniel Wiggs. Right photo, Mike Harrison.
A Big Thank You to Public Works!
The headline stories in the past two Montreat Minutes were about imminent ice and snowstorms, cold weather, and how to deal with it. The Montreat Public Works (PW) Department played a huge role in helping us get through the storms dealing with treacherous roads, downed trees, and other obstacles. PW Director, Barry Creasman, mustered the entire PW team both weekends to ensure our safety and mobility. Along with Barry, Jarod McIntosh, Michael Harrison, Drew Brown, and Daniel Wiggs make up the crew who left their families, gave up their weekends, and worked around the clock.
Over the course of the two storms, Public Works applied 260,000 pounds of sand and 10,000 pounds of ice melt. Ice melt was in such short supply that suppliers shipped it in from as far away as Utah.
We are extremely fortunate to have such a dedicated and talented crew with the equipment they needed to get us through the two storms. Next time you see members of the PW team, thank them for keeping us safe.

Wonder What to Recycle?

Montreat has a recycling program as part of the sanitation service. But, with all the talk about recycling, it can be confusing on what to recycle and how to handle it, especially when it comes to plastics. As we do with solid waste, Montreat contracts with a firm to handle our recycling. Here are a few tips on what our contractor accepts for recycling:
- Household glass, metal food cans, cereal boxes, juice containers, newspapers, and mixed paper can all be placed in the same bag blue or clear recycle bag.
- As for plastic, check the package/bottle to ensure it has a recycle emblem like the one above. Inside the recycle symbol is a number, 1-7. Our contractor accepts all seven types of plastic for recycling.
- If the plastic container does not have a recycle symbol, dispose of it with your solid waste.
- Insure that all your recycle containers, plastic, glass, and paper, are clean. Cardboard pizza boxes are not recyclable.
- As for caps and lids, applicable to all types of containers, remove the lids and place them in the recycle bag separately.
- All types of recycling can be placed in the same bag except for cardboard, which should be flattened and bundled separately.
