Native Plants

One way that Montreat promotes a healthy local ecosystem is by encouraging landscaping with native flora.

As a member of the Montreat Landcare Committee, the Town participants in an annual Native Plant Sale in order to promote awareness and use of native plants in Montreat yards, gardens and landscapes, while avoiding introductions of invasive, non-native species.

A community outdoor event on a grassy lawn with tents, people, plants for sale, a white utility bucket truck, and a small orange loader. Trees and mountains are visible in the background under clear skies.

Additionally, the Town has developed a Native Plant Garden along the banks of Flat Creek. The garden is a Certified Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation, is tied into the trail system that spreads throughout the cove, and is a tranquil location to reflect.

People are working outdoors, planting small shrubs and preparing soil along a dirt path in a wooded area. Some carry potted plants while others dig and arrange the landscaping. Trees and rocks surround the scene.

Finally, the Town maintains a list of recommended species for planting as an addendum to its Zoning Ordinance. Follow this link to download APPENDIX A – RECOMMENDED SPECIES FOR LANDSCAPING.
