Montreat Minute for March 6, 2026

Further Explanation on Road Repairs

Assembly Drive immediately after the Hurricane

Last week we announced an initial paving schedule for Montreat roads damaged by Hurricane Helene. With limited funds available, we are unable to repair all the roads at one time. Thus, a schedule has been prepared based on various factors including condition, usage, and funds availability.

We understand that it can be frustrating for residents whose roads are not included in the first round of paving projects. We will address all roads in need of repair. Some roads must undergo significant infrastructure repairs before paving can occur. For example, Lookout Road and Greybeard Trail require significant culvert repairs prior to paving to ensure the work is done properly and lasts long-term. We appreciate everyone’s patience as we work through these projects in a thoughtful and responsible way.

Mike Harrison on a Mission

As you drive up and down Assembly. Lookout, Greybeard and several other roads, you may have noticed a fresh look to the signs along those roads. Public Works Maintenance Worker Mike Harrison has been hard at work over the past few weeks repainting the backs and posts of road signs. Mike painted all the signs about five years ago. However, since then, time has taken a toll. The paint protection on many signs has degraded. The Hurricane destroyed many other signs and they have no paint on them. Thus, Mike has undertaken the arduous task of painting all the road signs in Montreat. The uniform look enhances the beauty of our Town.

How many signs? Mike is not sure. But he has already painted more than 350 signs, 120 of them on Assembly Drive alone! If you see Mike painting signs, stop and say “thanks” to him for helping keep our signs in excellent repair and looking good.
