Montreat Minute for August 8, 2025

Last Call to Take the Montreat Police Department Survey

This is the last call to complete the Montreat Police Department online survey. We have had a great response, with more than 250 completing the survey. The survey will be closed out early next week.

The purpose of the survey is to make sure our community remains a safe and welcoming place for all. Your input will help us identify the concerns that matter most to you.

Please take a few minutes to help shape the future of public safety in our Town. CLICK HERE to take the survey.

Once survey results are in, we’ll share the findings and Chief Eaton will host a series of Town meetings to discuss the top priorities in more detail.

Bear Update from the MPD

Bear peering in kitchen window on Eastminster Terrace. Notice the claws!

The Montreat Police Department reports there were two bear break-ins last weekend. Both break-ins occurred by the bears pushing out screens and crawling in the open windows. After climbing through the windows, the “perpetrators” went into the kitchens of both cottages, opened the refrigerators, and cleaned them out. In one case, the bear returned the next two nights.

To make matters worse, in one of the two instances, the family was asleep upstairs when the bear intruded. No one was hurt in either case.

The MPD recommends that first floor screened windows be closed when you are not present and at night. And as a reminder, just as the new bear signs say, “Don’t Approach, Secure Trash, Keep Doors (and windows!) Locked”.

The “victims” in both situations were renters and extended family of cottage owners. Please inform renters and others using your homes about bear precautions.
