Town of Montreat Bear Survey
At the August 2024 Town Council meeting, the Council agreed to set a meeting with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission to discuss the bear problems residents have experienced this year. Commissioner Fouche suggested a survey be done in advance of the meeting to determine the true extent of the bear issue.
Commissioners Fouche and Widmer developed a survey, whose purpose was to:
“Collect data from residents regarding bear experiences and perceptions in preparation for meeting with NCWRC to discuss bear management solutions in Montreat and develop our own plans.”
The survey was launched to Montreaters on August 21 and was concluded on September 8. There was excellent participation with 450 responses to the survey. 92% of all respondents were Montreat homeowners.
