Help Light the Gate

The Town of Montreat, MRA, and the Montreat Adult Summer Club are joining together for a very special activity. The triumvirate is developing plans to light the Montreat gate for the holidays this year and in the future, just like it was in 2022.

But your help is needed by making a donation to help purchase the lights and other supplies needed to make this happen. Make your tax deductible check out to the Town of Montreat and note it is for Gate Lights. Send it to Town of Montreat, PO Box 423, Montreat, 28757.

Then, come to the Community Gate and Tree Lighting on November 17 for a special lighting celebration.

Adult Summer Club July 24th Program Features Dr. Carl Savory

Col (R) Carlton ”Carl” Savory, M.D., is a West Point graduate, decorated Army veteran, and a highly accomplished orthopedic surgeon. Dr. Savory’s Army career included service in Vietnam as a Ranger, medical support in the Gulf War, and he served as the first command surgeon assigned to Delta Force. Later, he served as an investigator in the Marine Corps Beirut barracks bombing.

But perhaps Dr. Savory’s most memorable experience was as a team member of Operation Eagle Claw. Operation Eagle Claw was the failed operation by the United States Armed Forces to rescue 53 embassy staff held captive at the Embassy of the United States, Tehran, Iran, on April 24,1980. Dr. Savory served as the Chief Medical Officer on the mission in which eight American servicemen were killed, four injured and seven aircraft abandoned, captured, or destroyed.

Dr. Savory will share about his experiences with Operation Eagle Claw, how the failure happened, and what was learned. Watch the movie, Desert One, beforehand to learn more about the mission and so you can ask him questions that weren’t answered in the movie!

Where’s Monte This Week?

Monte has had a very busy two weeks! Last week he helped the Public Works Department with Bulk Pickup. He couldn’t believe how many treasures people were tossing out! His Guinea coop is so full of “stuff” he found, he has to sleep outside.

After his dumpster diving escapades, he scooted around Town until he found a spot to rest. Can you tell us where Monte stopped to rest in the photo below?

Send your guesses to [email protected] by Monday at noon and win a $10 gift card to the Huckleberry!
