Montreat Minute 4/19/24
All About Bears
On Wednesday, approximately 55 people attended a program at the Town Hall entitled “Know Your 3 B’s– Bears, Behavior, and Biology”. The event was co-sponsored by the Montreat Bearwise Committee and Montreat Presbyterian Church. It was presented by Ashley Hobbs from the NC Wildlife Resources Commission. Ashley is a bear specialist and has spoken several times at Montreat in the past.
The program was recorded. If you would like to watch Ashley’s presentation, CLICK HERE.
Landcare and Flat Creek Crossing Need Your Opinion
Friends of Montreat, your feedback is needed! A Landcare committee team is working on plans and raising funds for the first fully accessible trail and park located just inside the Gate, downstream from the footbridge at the Memorial Garden. This new site, Flat Creek Crossing, will provide unique ways to enjoy nature for individuals living with disabilities or mobility challenges and their companions.
As plans are being developed, we want to know what you think. Please take five minutes (honestly, that’s all it takes!) to complete a short survey. CLICK HERE to take the survey.
Thank you for your help. For more information and progress updates, visit the website www.montreatlandcare.org . If you have comments or questions, contact Patti Pyle [email protected]
“Everyone should be able to get to the creek!”

Treasured Tree Event May 4
In January, the Town Council voted to participate in the Swannanoa Valley Tree Alliance’s Treasured Tree program. Fourteen special trees in Montreat have been selected to be designated in the Treasured Tree program and marked accordingly.
On Saturday, May 4, from 10:00am to noon, a walking tour of the 14 trees will be held. The tour is approximately 2-2.5 miles, with stops along the route to learn about the history and significance of each tree.
