Montreat Minute 2/16/24

Corrections to the Montreat Community Calendar

In last week’s Montreat Minute, we ran a community calendar with some of the many events occurring in Montreat this year. Unfortunately, there were several date/time errors:

  • The second Town of Montreat Bulk Pick Up is on Tuesday, October 29th, not September 29th
  • The time of the PHC’s Distinguished Reformation Lecture is 7:00pm on October 25th, not 7:30.

We are rerunning the entire calendar for your convenience. Please note that this is not a complete list, but hopefully it will help in your planning process. Enjoy the variety of activities in Montreat!

Montreat Earns Tree City Award for Ninth Year

The Town of Montreat earned Tree City USA status from the national Arbor Day Foundation for the ninth consecutive year. Montreat is one of 3,600 communities across the USA to achieve this designation.

Montreat achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting four program requirements:

  1. Having an active tree board
  2. Having a tree-care ordinance
  3. Having an annual community forestry budget
  4. Having an annual Arbor Day observance and proclamation

“In Montreat, trees mean so much to us,” stated Mayor Tim Helms. “The beauty of our trees and forests is what makes Montreat Montreat. We understand the importance of stewardship that is required to positively affect our cove’s ecosystem and beauty.”

Voting Question Resolved

At last Thursday’s Town Council meeting, a question was asked about the new state law requiring a photo ID for elections, including the upcoming NC primary election on March 5. Considering that Montreat voter registration cards indicate our town address as Black Mountain while drivers’ licenses indicate Montreat, the question was asked if there will be problems at the polling place with the conflicting addresses. Mayor Helms responded that we didn’t have an answer to the question, but would find out.

The Town’s extremely resourceful Clerk, Angie Murphy, quickly contacted the Board of Elections and was told that poll workers do not check addresses. Voters will be asked to present a valid photo ID upon entering the voting facility. They will look at the ID and look at the voter to ensure the photo matches the person trying to vote. As long as you match your ID picture there will not be any issues with voting.

2024 Montreat Cottagers Directory Update

As mentioned in an earlier Montreat Minute, work has begun on updating the Montreat Cottagers Directory for 2024. The Directory Committee has reached out to all residents to verify contact information and has had an excellent response from many. However, many emails have bounced back as undeliverable or there was no email to send an update to. If you have not yet received an email or phone call requesting updates and have not already reached out to the Directory Committee, please contact Laurie Morgan (828-669-7626 or [email protected]) with corrected information.

The new Directory is expected to be on sale July 4th. Details regarding sales will be announced in the Montreat Minute and elsewhere in the spring.

If you have any questions, contact Laurie Morgan at [email protected] or 828-669-7626. The Directory Committee, which puts a great deal of time and effort into the Directory, is composed of Meredith Greene, Ellen Henschen, Laurie Morgan, Grace Nichols, and Ann Vinson. Please thank them for their work.
