Help the Monarch Butterflies

As you may know, each fall millions of monarch butterflies migrate thousands of miles to over-wintering sites in Mexico and to a scattering of locations along the coast of California. In the spring, they return to their original breeding areas and the cycle starts again: a two-way migration that is one of the most spectacular on the planet. Yet, this migration appears to be declining. One of the reasons for the decline is loss of milkweed needed for monarch caterpillars to grow and develop due to habitat conversion and adverse land management.

But you can help by being a part of the Mayor’s Monarch Challenge, sponsored by the Montreat Landcare Committee. Plant milkweed in your yard to increase the Monarchs’ habitat. Free milkweed seeds are available. Mail a self-addressed stamped envelope to: Live Monarch-2022 Seed Campaign, PO Box 1339, Blairsville, Georgia 30514. You will receive 15 or more milkwood seeds. Let’s help revive the Monarch butterfly population!
