Montreat Re-Elects Mayor/Commissioners

In Tuesday’s election, Montreat Mayor Tim Helms and Commissioners Kitty Fouche and Jane Alexander were each re-elected for four-year terms on the Town Council. Each ran unopposed. This represents second terms for both Tim and Kitty, while Jane was elected in her first full term. Jane was appointed to the Council in September 2019 to complete the unexpired term of Bill Gilliland. The other three Commissioner positions, currently held by Alice Lentz, Kent Otto and Tom Widmer, will be up for election in November 2022.

Need Help with Leaf Removal?

Leaves provide significant fuel for wildfire!  Now is the time to get them out of your yard. And, like last year, Montreat College students are available to help.  You provide tools and bags; the students provide the labor for $15/hour per student.  It is best to have fewer students for a longer period of time.  They will be masked and follow college guidelines for social distancing.  Text Jason Scott at 937-219-9116.  This is a win-win!  Leaves will be away from your house and college students can earn some always needed funds!

Town Hall “Gardeners of Weedin’” Hard at Work

As mentioned in a previous Montreat Minute, a group of Montreaters has formed to provide Town Hall garden maintenance and increase the beauty of the landscaping, both around the building and in the pocket park. Dubbing themselves the “Gardeners of Weedin’”, the group has already done fall maintenance of pruning, weeding, deadheading flowers and other similar duties. They have met on several occasions for planning and brainstorming.

Most recently, two members, Susan Holcomb and Jacqueline Clark, set up an attractive fall harvest display in front of the Town Hall sign. We are grateful to Brinkley and Robin Melvin for donating the flowers, pumpkins and gourds. And, we are grateful for all the “Weedin’” members for their contribution of time and talent. If you are interested in being a part of the gardeners, please contact Susan Holcomb at [email protected] or call 828/231-2293.

Other Important Information

  • The Planning and Zoning Commission met yesterday, November 5, in its final review of the zoning ordinances prior to presenting them to the Town Council next Thursday. If you would like to view the video of the meeting, CLICK HERE.
  • Have you noticed the change in location of the Montreat Town Limits sign? The sign was still in the old location near the gate despite the annexation of the Town Hall property earlier this year. It was moved to the new Town limit on Montreat Road. Thanks to Mary Standaert for suggesting to move the sign.

Stay well and have a great weekend.
