Montreat Minute for September 20, 2019

Town Receives Financial Reporting Award

We learned earlier this week that Montreat has earned a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association, a national organization purposed to advance excellence in public finance. We received the award based on our 2017-2018 comprehensive annual financial report, or audit as most people know it. The transmittal letter that Darlene Carrasquillo, our Director of Finance, received from the Association stated, “The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment. Congratulations for having satisfied the high standards of the program.”

We offer appreciation to both Darlene and Alex Carmichael for their diligence and expertise in properly managing and reporting our Town’s financial situation. We also received the award last year.

Greybeard Trail Construction Bid Offered

As mentioned in last week’s Montreat Minute, we are making progress in repairing the Greybeard Trail damage caused last year by Tropical Storm Alberto. An Advertisement for Bids was recently posted at https://townofmontreat.org/bid-opportunities/ under “Construction Bids”. An open pre-bid meeting is scheduled for interested parties on Monday, September 23 at 2:00pm in the Town Services Office.

More Construction News

The Public Works building project, as mentioned last week, is also moving along, with the hopes of having the building completed by year’s end. The metal building on a cement pad is to be located behind the MRA Maintenance building. The Montreat Board of Adjustment will hear a request for setback variance for the Public Works building on Thursday, September 26, 2019, at 7:00pm in the Walkup Building. This is the only item on the Board of Adjustment’s agenda.

How About Them Walls!

You can’t help but notice the construction progress on the new Town Hall. Carpenters have been busy this week framing the exterior walls and interior partitions. We’re excited about the progress, as this step was not scheduled to begin for several weeks! If you happen to walk by the site, stop to look at the sample wall showing the rock base as well as color selections for the exterior.

Other Meetings

Other upcoming meetings of interest include the Montreat Tree Board on Tuesday, September 24, at 9:30am in the Town Services Office; The Planning and Zoning Commission on Thursday, September 26, at 10:00am in the Walkup Building; and the Montreat Landcare Committee on Wednesday, October 2, at 9:00am in the Swannanoa Room of the Allen Building.

Enjoy the weekend!
