Cold Weather Tips from Town Hall

The Montreat area is expected to experience an arctic blast this week and into the weekend. Extreme cold can often mean frozen and burst pipes. Pipes that are most likely to freeze are exposed to the cold, (outdoor hose bibs, swimming pool supply lines), water supply pipes in unheated interior areas (basements, crawl spaces, attics, garages), and pipes that run against exterior walls that have little or no insulation.

Cold Weather Tips:

• Keep garage doors closed and shut vents in crawlspaces
• Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing
• Let cold water drip from a faucet
• Disconnect all garden hoses from outside spigots
• Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature both during the day and at night
• Bring pets inside
• Fill your bathtub up – in case there is large water main break you will then have water to flush toilets
