Montreat Minute 12/22/23

Merry Christmas from the Town Council and Staff!

Holiday Hours and Sanitation Pickup

The Montreat Town offices will be closed for the Christmas Holiday on Monday and Tuesday, December 25th and 26th. Normal hours will resume on Wednesday, December 27th.

Please note that sanitation pick up will not occur until Wednesday the 27th. However, the Town Sanitation Convenience Center will be open 24/7 for Montreat residents. Of course, police services will be available as usual.

The offices will also be closed on New Year’s Day, Monday, January 1, and will reopen on Tuesday at 8:00am. Again, sanitation pick up will be delayed until Tuesday the 2nd.

Many Thanks to Our Public Works Staff

Monday night brought cold, wind and overall miserable conditions to Montreat, which made it even difficult to go out and walk the dog. But, while we were warm inside our homes, the Public Works staff was called out to handle two emergency situations. Approximately 7:30pm, a tree fell, blocking Georgia Terrace and taking down overhead lines. While the PW team was working on clearing the tree, a large water main on Kanawha split open. With the water gushing at 200 PSI, it made a geyser 15’ high and knocked out water service for homes on Kanawha, Mississippi, and other nearby areas.

Despite the cold and wind, the PW team worked to isolate the break, shut off the water, and replace five feet of water pipe that suffered from aging infrastructure. They had to take periodic breaks to warm their hands and bodies. But, by 1:00am, residents had water service. The Public Works team made it home just before 2:00am.

We are fortunate to have such a dedicated staff that would endure personal hardship to bring important utilities back to Montreaters, rather than waiting for the morning when it would have been more convenient and comfortable. Three cheers and many thanks to our Public Works team, including Barry Creasman, Jarod McIntosh, Daniel Wiggs, Drew Brown, and Mike Harrison.

Black Mountain Fire Department Wants Your Opinion

No doubt you are aware that Montreat’s fire protection and EMS services are provided by the Black Mountain Fire Department (BMFD). We are grateful for their important and essential service.

The BMFD would like your opinion on the services they provide. Would you take a few minutes to complete a survey so they can assess and improve services? CLICK HERE to take the short survey. They will be most appreciative of your participation.

Late Water Bills This Month

Due to implementation of new financial software in the Town, December water bills will be slightly delayed. They will likely be mailed next week. But no worries, you will have the same amount of time to pay your bill and no late fees will be assessed for the December bills.

Thank you for your understanding, and we are excited about the rollout of this new software system.

Do You Know What to Recycle?

There is a bit more to recycling than just throwing everything that seems recyclable into blue bags. And with Christmas approaching, it is a good time to know what should/should not be recycled.

Curbie, an Asheville based firm that handles recycling for Asheville and several other WNC communities, offers suggestions on what to recycle and what not to recycle. Read the charts above to know the in’s and out’s of recycling. Or CLICK HERE to learn more about preparing your recycling. You’ll be surprised.
