Montreat Minute for September 17, 2021

Board of Adjustment Meeting Thursday, September 23 Additional Information

The Montreat Board of Adjustment will hold a Public Hearing on Thursday, September 23, 2021, at 4:00 p.m. However, due to COVID concerns and the need for social distancing, the public hearing for the Montreat Lodge at 309 Collegiate Circle will not be heard on the 23rd, but will be continued to a date certain.  New meeting arrangements are still being worked out with the parties involved. Please stay tuned for meeting arrangements. A Special Montreat Minute will be sent and updates made on the Town website (www.townofmontreat.org) when final plans are established.

The purpose of the public hearing is as follows: 1) A variance request for 314 Lookout Road for side and rear setbacks for a residential addition;  and 2) A Special Use Permit (SUP) for 309 Collegiate Circle for a 40-room hotel and site improvements. Again, the variance for 314 Lookout Road will move forward on the 23rd, but the SUP for 309 Collegiate Circle will be continued.

Please be advised that the meeting is a quasi-judicial hearing, which means no public comment period will be included. Instead, individuals with “standing” as determined by the Board of Adjustment will be the only parties allowed to present testimony in the hearing.

Call for Volunteers

The Planning & Zoning Commission is calling for volunteers to serve on the Town of Montreat Comprehensive Plan Update Steering Committee. The nine-member committee will be made up of representatives from the various Town entities and community members at-large. The Committee’s work will begin in January 2022 and conclude with the completed report in June 2022.

If you are interested in volunteering for the Committee, please complete an application form by CLICKING HERE or stop by the Town Hall to pick up a paper copy. The deadline for submitting applications is October 1st.

Be “Firewise”

Fall is in the air, which means it is time to remember that yard debris (leaves, twigs, fallen limbs, etc.) is the number one cause of the spread of wildfire.  Let’s work to keep Montreat safe!

As you clear your property of debris and prune the rhododendron and mountain laurel, please remember to report the hours that you work to Nancy Midgette ([email protected]).  Reporting these hours to the National Fire Prevention Association is a critical part of our annual application to renew our Firewise status.  Report your own labor or labor that you pay others to do.  The important thing is remove the debris!

Updates and Reminders

  • The Montreat Tree Board will meet on Tuesday, September 28, at 9:30am in the Town Hall. The meeting will be live-streamed. Login details to follow. Just a reminder that masks are required (and available) in the Town Hall.
